What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is an umbrella term for various silicate materials (rock-forming minerals). It was widely used in the Australian building and construction industry between the 1940s and 1980s for its durability, strength, and insulation properties. However, the product, including its manufacture and supply, was banned in December 2003 after discovering an influx of asbestos-related disease and other health concerns.

What Makes It So Hazardous?

Asbestos is extremely hazardous due to its fibre composition. When airborne and inhaled, asbestos fibres can attach themselves to the lungs and other tissues and organs, resulting in serious health issues. While its fibres are microscopic, they are also very sharp and rigid, often puncturing the lungs upon inhalation. What’s more, asbestos-related health concerns can take decades to appear, making early intervention and diagnosis difficult.

Common Asbestos-Related Illnesses

Asbestos most commonly affects the lungs and is responsible for the development of several serious respiratory conditions and cancers. Common asbestos-related illnesses include:

Types of Asbestos

Here at Goat Collective, we’re qualified to handle both bonded and friable asbestos, ensuring a safe and efficient removal. As such, we offer comprehensive asbestos disposal services tailored to your residential or commercial needs.

Friable

Friable asbestos is the most precarious form of asbestos and is highly dangerous due to its loose, crumbly fibres. It is often found in old insulation, appliance lining, and fire retardant sprays. Friable fibres contain extremely high levels of asbestos and, due to their delicate nature, are more likely to spread in airborne environments. These fibres are incredibly hazardous and must be handled and disposed of by Class A licenced asbestos removalists.

Bonded

Most commonly found in houses, you might have heard bonded asbestos referred to as non-friable asbestos. Still dangerous but posing fewer risks, bonded asbestos is asbestos tightly bound within materials such as concrete, tiles, textured paint, and vinyl flooring. These solid and rigid materials trap and contain asbestos fibres, making them safer and easier to handle if undisturbed.
