Types of Asbestos
Friable
Friable asbestos is the most precarious form of asbestos and is highly dangerous due to its loose, crumbly fibres. It is often found in old insulation, appliance lining, and fire retardant sprays. Friable fibres contain extremely high levels of asbestos and, due to their delicate nature, are more likely to spread in airborne environments. These fibres are incredibly hazardous and must be handled and disposed of by Class A licenced asbestos removalists.
Bonded
Most commonly found in houses, you might have heard bonded asbestos referred to as non-friable asbestos. Still dangerous but posing fewer risks, bonded asbestos is asbestos tightly bound within materials such as concrete, tiles, textured paint, and vinyl flooring. These solid and rigid materials trap and contain asbestos fibres, making them safer and easier to handle if undisturbed.
